通俗拉丁語，意思是通俗話，又叫做民間拉丁語，或流行拉丁語。是古典拉丁語在民間通俗變體，中世紀早期開始分化，至九世紀成爲羅曼語支的一支。

通俗拉丁語(原始羅曼語)在羅馬帝國各省發展各異，逐漸產生了不同的羅曼語。約瑟夫·黑爾曼(József Herman)稱：
公元813年的第三次圖爾會議要求神父使用地方語言傳道，即 rustica lingua romanica (通俗拉丁語)或日耳曼地方語言，因爲當時的百姓已經無法理解規範拉丁語。在一代人的時間內，便產生了查理曼的孫子禿頭查理和日耳曼人路易之間的《斯特拉斯堡誓言》(公元842年)，它使用了一種已經不同於拉丁語的語言。見下文選段：

大約從這時起，本地拉丁語開始被視爲獨立語言，發展出了地方規範，有些產生了自己的正字法，因此既然所有現代羅曼語變體都是通俗拉丁語的後續，則後者不應被視爲已滅亡，而是概念和帶有區域差異痕跡的術語的替換。
